9 Fun Facts About Snus Brands

There are some things all snus brands have in common. They all contain tobacco, they all come in tins, and they all include a blend of various herbs or flavorings.

But there’s also plenty that differentiates brands, such as the stories behind them. We’ll be shedding some light on these tales through fun facts about snus brands.

1. Vårgårda’s Factory is a Historic Mill from 1432

On the surface, Vårgårda might not look like the most historic snus brand — it was only launched in 2023 (although manufacturer Nordic Snus dates back a couple of decades further).

But its manufacturing facility has a history of its own, as the brand’s production happens in a historic mill first built around 1432.

Since it was rebuilt in 2000, the factory has been converted into a mecca for sustainable energy, using power from the local river. No wonder it’s one of the top upcoming snus brands we stock.

2. Jakobssons Snus Started in a Home Kitchen

Jakobssons snus is one of our most popular brands, but most people aren’t aware of its eccentric founder or humble beginnings.

Before it became a globally successful snus brand, Jakobssons was the passion project of founder Henrik Jakobsson. He started making the formulation in his own kitchen after becoming tired of working for other brands.

After experimenting with various flavors, he launched his first product in 2003, and his vision has only grown over time. Proving wrong the common myth that snus isn’t as flavorsome as nicotine pouches, products boast interesting taste profiles like melon and cola.

3. Islay Whisky Uses a Unique Whisky Combo

The name and can designs of Islay Whisky snus make it clear that the user should expect a strong taste of spirit from the pouches. Sure enough, each formulation contains a single-malt scotch whisky.

But this isn’t where the unique production process ends.

The tobacco in Islay Whisky comes from Nicaragua and South Africa, and it’s then taken to a special heating room for treatment. Instead of using the pasteurization method favored among most snus producers, the brand opts for the “sweating method,” which involves storing tobacco in whisky barrels for flavoring.

4. Skruf Started in a Dairy Factory

Intrigued by Jakobssons having a founding story that starts in someone’s kitchen? Skruf snus arguably has an even more eccentric background, with its origins dating back to an old dairy factory.

Founders Jonas Engwall and Adam Gillberg started the brand in 2003 out of a love for snus. Their operations originally took place in a dairy factory, which they transformed into an impressive production facility.

They were determined to add some true heritage to their snus, and have since gained a reputation for high-quality production.

5. Nobody Knows Who Nick and Johnny Are

Those who don’t know anything about the brand might pick up a can of Nick and Johnny snus and assume that these names belong to two men from the nineteenth century.

But the truth is that nobody knows who Nick and Johnny are.

The brand launched in 2006 in Norway, and has since become a favorite of those looking for modern designs and adventurous flavors.

Whether the name was chosen as an intrigue marketing tactic or simply as a matter of anonymity, it seemed to work!

6. The Lab Series is a Rebellion Against Brands

It’s clear from looking at the packaging of LAB snus that this isn’t the typical brand. The can designs are a simple gray with lettering, and each product has a number rather than a name.

This is by design, with the concept behind The Lab Series being a rebellion against labels. After all, when it comes to snus, quality should shine through!

To meet this vision, products emphasize simplicity so the the flavors speak for themselves, boasting a tobacco-centric flavor with a modern touch.

7. Siberia is the Strongest on the Market

Some snus aficionados may be aware that Siberia snus is some of the very strongest on the market, and many believe it’s the best snus, too.

Its strength is the reason behind the brand’s choice to bear the name of the Russian province.

Siberia happens to be the coldest inhabited part of the world, and the temperature frequently goes down to 40 or 50 degrees below zero. This inspired the name and concept behind Siberia snus, which has been formulated to provide an intense, icy experience.

8. LD Snus Hails from Japan

Most people know snus as being a Swedish product, and that’s certainly where its routes lie. But in the twenty-first century, snus has become a global phenomenon.

LD Snus is manufactured by Nordic Snus in Western Sweden. But Nordic Snus is a subsidiary of Japan Tobacco International (JTI), which also makes Camel cigarettes. This makes the snus brand part of a global supply chain.

9. AG Snus was Family-Owned for Five Generations

Kapten snus has been manufactured by Swedish Match since January 2024, following Philip Morris International’s purchase of the Kapten brand in 2021.

But before this, original manufacturer Assens Tobaksfabrik (AG Snus) achieved the impressive feat of being family-owned for five generations, starting in 1864.

To honor this heritage, the original Assens Tobacco factory coordinates are featured on every Kapten tin.
